If you are a beginner, this is the most prominent question which always comes to your mind when you have to apply a normal sudden brake in your car.

Should I press Clutch while Braking?
Or Should I press Clutch before Brakes?
Should I press Brakes before Clutch?
Or Should I press Both at once?

😀

Why does it Matter?

It matters because, what you do in this scenario, directly impacts your vehicle’s parts like brakes and clutch. Also, it is a risk factor and causes accidents and vehicle rolling.

Pressing the Clutch First – The Cons!

It is the easiest way to prevent your car from accidental stalling. You press the clutch and then you press the brakes. It is the easy way hence it is quite natural and many beginners get used to it. But, it has a few negative impacts on your car and drivability.

  1. In general, at any point of time, when you are pressing the clutch, you are disconnecting the drivetrain (The system in a motor vehicle which connects the transmission to the drive axles) and the engine, resulting in your vehicle movement at more speed.
  2. If your vehicle is moving at high speed then engaging the clutch first will increase the speed of vehicle more and it becomes comparitively hard to brake and control the vehicle, mostly around the corners and on the higways.

Pressing the Brakes First – The Pros!

As you might have seen in the video as well, pressing the brakes first is always advisable as it gives the following benefits –

  1. The vehicle uses the engine braking resulting in drability.
  2. You get more control on the vehicle braking thus avoiding accidents.
  3. Your mileage will improve drastically, try this out and you will realize it.
  4. It is the safest way to drive and avoid high speed and corner rolling accidents
  5. The brake disc and the brake pads will wear and tear less because they will get help from engine while braking.

Conclusion

Always press the brakes first. Once your vehicle RPM reaches around 10 KMPH, you can press the clutch to avoid stalling. Use the clutch mostly to change the gears while driving. If you have to apply sudden brakes, don’t think much, once in a while pressing both brakes and clutch is not going to harm your vehicle, definitely not over a life. 🙂
